Referred to as Lu Hui in the Chinese Medicine material medica, aloe is a not only a food but also an herb. It is bitter and cold and can be found in the purgative category of the materia medica, so therefore it is used to do as such : purge. Aloe purges the bowels and clears heat, kills parasites and strengthens the digestion, can be used topically for insect bites and/or burns, relieves constipation, soothes vertex headaches, and calms irritability.
