Young Wild Leeks and Yang Energy

on Thu, 04/22/2010 - 20:30

Spring time is a yang time in Chinese Medicinal terms, while winter is a yin time.

Soups, Salads, and Spring

on Sun, 04/11/2010 - 20:30

Now that Spring is arriving, it's time to lighten the food load a bit, and increase your fresh vegetable and fruit intake. However, it is still incredibly important to avoid going all raw and salad-crazy just because the weather is warmer.

Food as Medicine I

on Tue, 02/16/2010 - 20:30

There have been so many medicinal food tidbits that I've wanted to share that I thought a round up of the recent gatherings would be a nice kick off for February (mid-February in any case!). So without further ado, five of my favorites for this month...

Ending on a Sweet Note (Happy 2010!)

on Tue, 12/22/2009 - 17:30

Another year is rolling into it's final days (at least for those going by the Georgian calendar, because in Thailand according to the Buddhist calendar it is 2553 for a little while longer and that's where we're going!). In any case all this has

Kale Carbonara : The Winter Cure

on Sat, 11/07/2009 - 17:30

Though many of the greens will be disappearing from our tables until Spring and Summer return, kale will keep us company throughout much of the Winter. In fact, it's flavor is sweetened by a kiss of frost.

Apples Make You Juicy

on Thu, 10/29/2009 - 13:30

The whole "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" wasn't far from the truth. Apples serve many functions, not the least of which is to increase body fluids according to Chinese medicine.

The Plump Pumpkin

on Sat, 10/24/2009 - 12:30

I love the Fall and I love pumpkins, and not only to carve scary faces into but to cook in a million different ways. I finally managed to get out of the city and go pluck some pumpkins from their patch just a week ago. Almost 80% of pumpkins are harvested in October so now is the time to enjoy these lovely (mostly) orange globes.

The Little Fish

on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 13:30

I love little fish. All of them. Sardines, mackerel (the small and the larger ones), herring, anchovies, smelt, kippers, and on and on. Here's the wonderful medicinal news on them: they are excellent in every which way.

The End of Summer

on Thu, 09/10/2009 - 15:30

I always drag out each season to the last possible minute, and then some. I was still stewing dinners, warm and slow, when June came around. Even though by then winter was long gone. And now, at the last possible minute as the fall is inching it's way in, I finally managed to put together a gazpacho. Last of the tomatoes, the peppers, and the cucumbers for 2009 (at least seasonally speaking).

Medicinal Orangettes

on Thu, 09/03/2009 - 16:30

I have always loved orangettes (sans chocolate), they're bitter, sweet, slightly toothy, and just plain lovely. I don't particularly like sickly sweet treats and I've always been more on the savory or flavorsome punch side.
